A SERIOUS CONVERSATION BETWEEN RECTOR DUMAN ORYNBEKOV AND TOP SCHOOL GRADUATES Rector's Reflections

On May 4, 2025, Shakarim University hosted a pivotal day of the expansive international forum, Innovate Shakarim University, which amalgamated scientific initiatives, youth leadership, sports, and regional collaboration.

Rector Duman Orynbekov engaged with top graduates from schools in the regional center, prospective master's students, and college graduates from Semey.

First Meeting: High School Graduates

Representatives from leading schools and lyceums of Semey and the Abai region attended, totaling over 1,200 graduates, including those from the "Zhas-Ulan" lyceum.

Discussion Highlights

The conversation commenced with the rector posing a question: "Which landmarks in Semey hold the most significance and interest for the region?"

Students mentioned historical sites such as the Abai Museum, Abai Theater, the suspension bridge, and the "Stronger Than Death" monument. Shakarim University was also recognized as an integral part of the city's history, acknowledged by both the students and the rector.

Notable Alumni

The rector emphasized that while many distinguished alumni work across Kazakhstan, a significant number remain at the university. Notably, Alexey Klivenko, head of the National Center for Radiological Research, and Ilyas Zhumadilov, head of the Department of Geodesy and Construction, among others.

Key Statistics

Annually, over 1,000 graduates complete their studies, with approximately 1.5% continuing to work at the university.

Over 90 years, more than 70,000 specialists have graduated.

In the past three years, the student body has grown by 1.5 times, now totaling around 8,000 students.

The college enrolls over 1,100 students.

Looking Ahead

When asked about the university's future as it approaches its centennial and the region's prospects, responses were visionary yet valuable. The region requires thousands of specialists in engineering, biotechnology, ecology, and the agricultural sector. With rapidly evolving technologies, there's a heightened demand for skilled professionals, particularly in the region. The labor market has transformed.

Shakarim University serves as a gateway to opportunities. In 2024, it welcomed over 400 recipients of the "Altyn Belgi" award. The government places a strong emphasis on regional development, trust, responsibility, and challenges.

Rector's Message to Students

"Each of us must realize: opportunities are here, in your city, in Semey, at Shakarim University. They don't need to be sought; they need to be seized."

The university has experienced a surge of young educators and researchers, many of whom have studied in Japan, England, China, and Korea, and are multilingual. This new generation of scientists thinks in ideas, not clichés.

Volunteers hail from countries like Turkey, China, England, the USA, Poland, and France. We are trusted, chosen, and we are growing.

Today, Shakarim University stands as a platform for regional development, a nexus of talent, a place where one can face the future directly and make the right choice.

"Today was a mature discussion about choice. But the right to choose—I leave that to you," concluded the rector.

Event Outcomes

Presentation of over 30 innovative projects.
